Making a Buzz for the Coast Project
Bumblebees are familiar and much-loved insects that pollinate some of our most important crops and wildflowers. In recent years, bumblebee numbers have declined dramatically – causing great concern for farmers and growers, as well as for those who care about the future of wild flowers and their habitats.
Kent, with its long history of horticulture and fruit production, as well as its relative warm climate, retains one of the UKs most important diversities of bumblebee species – supporting 22 of the UK’s 24 species, and the north Kent coast supports 5 of the UK’s 7 rare and vulnerable species.
Making a Buzz for the Coast is an ambitious natural heritage project which spans 135 miles of coastline from Dartford to Deal and focuses on North and East Kent’s wild pollinator populations, especially bumblebees. The project will secure a future for the Kent coast’s wild bees in which they not just survive but thrive.
The project is led by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BBCT) in partnership with Kent Wildlife Trust, Kent County Council, Natural England and the RSPB. It is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund
